The SPTC has entered into twinning arrangements with the likes of municipalities of Trollhattan in Sweden, Polokwane in South Africa and Tsumeb in Namibia.

Addressing a full council meeting recently mayor, Molosiwa Molosiwa said the twinning initiatives that were started under the Local Economic Development committee have not been doing well.

“It is a concern by government that a lot of these arrangements have been started throughout the country, but are not achieving anything and some have been left hanging by some districts,” he said.

He regretted that this does not portray a good picture of the country hence there is need for council to start where it left off and move forward.  Councillor Molefi Pilane expressed concern that the twinning arrangements have not achieved anything and said it is a pity that council resources have been spent.

Meanwhile, Botswana Power Corporation is currently changing analogue postpaid metres in streetlights around the town to digital prepaid metres. This entails the installation of around 140 prepaid metres.

Molosiwa said the project has negatively affected the illumination in the town.  “Upon completion of the exercise and continuing routine maintenance by council, illumination is expected to greatly improve by the end of this quarter,” he said.

Councillor Evelyn Kgodungwe said that having 140 prepaid metres would call for serious monitoring.

She said that there would need to be an officer who specifically deals with recharging all the metres to prevent the whole town becoming dark at some point.
