Girls Continue To Outsmart Boys In BGCSE Exams

The girls did it again in the just released results.
Releasing the 2017 results on Friday, the BEC executive secretary, Professor Brian Mokopakgosi told a media briefing that he was happy to announce that once again females students have outperformed their male counterparts.
“I do not know what is wrong with our male students as they appear to be in a difficult competition as compared to their females peers where BGCSE are concerned.
“For the past consecutive years, females have been performing better than male students. History repeated itself even this year. I call upon parents to encourage their male children to up their game,” Mokopakgosi said with a smile.
He said that a total of 37,251 candidates sat for the 2017 BGCSE of which 21,661 being 58.15% were females and 15,590 being 41.85%.
Mokopakgosi said this year there was an increase of 5.04 percent in candidature compared to 35,655 in 2016.
He said since the BGCSE is a subject-based certificate with no aggregation the measure used to gauge the performance of candidates is the proportion of candidates who were awarded grade C or better in five syllabi.
He said this year 24.05% candidates from government and government aided schools were awarded Grade C or better in five syllabi compared to 25.46% in 2016 showing a decline of 1.41 percent, indicating that the two cohorts were more or less the same quality.
“St Joseph’s College once again topped other schools and scooped position one.
“The most improved school is Ledumang Senior Secondary School. Nata Senior Secondary School also significantly improved as compared to the previous year.
Shakawe Senior Secondary School has also gone up a little bit looking at the fact that it has been performing badly over the years,” Mokopakgosi said.
In the past parents have been encouraged to continue supporting their children as it has been proven that active parental involvement in children’s educational pursuits keeps them on track during the learning process.
It has since been highlighted that doing so also discourages them from losing sight of their academic goals.
