Facebook Job Seeker Gets Raped

Detective assistant superintendent Madziba Duna of Urban Police Station told The Monitor they are currently investigating the case.

“The incident occurred on February 9, 2018 in Gaborone. The woman had initially posted on her Facebook (account) asking for members of the public to help her find a job and the suspect later replied claiming to have found her a job asking her to meet him in Gaborone so that he could go with her to the alleged company,” Duna said.

He said that the suspect claimed to have found her a job at Sanitas tea gardens and told her to meet with him so that he could take her to meet the bosses.

“On that morning the young woman came from Kanye to meet with the suspect at Fairgrounds where they both walked to Sanitas tea gardens. On their way in the middle of the bush the suspect told the woman to offer him sex in return of the favour he had done for her.  She refused his proposal, but the man raped her and later ran off into the bushes and the woman came to report the matter to us,” Duna said.

Duna said on his Facebook account the young man used his surname ‘Ramaboane’ and luckily one of their employees, a police officer uses the same surname and he managed to identify him as his cousin after the police searched for him on Facebook.

“We followed the young man, who works as a security officer and the victim identified him as the person who tricked her into having found her a job only to later rape her.  The man did not deny her claims.  He is currently in police custody with investigations ongoing,” Duna said.

Duna said they have tested the suspect and they are currently waiting for forensic results to confirm the suspect’s DNA.

He pleaded with members of the public to be cautious when using social media to avoid ending up as victims.  He pleaded with people, especially women to be cautious at all times when seeking help through social media as they are more vulnerable as compared to their male counterparts.
