The Argentinean was reportedly on his way out after the end of the season, but the two parties have since agreed a new two-year deal.

He has been with the club for one season and a half after joining them in the middle of the 2015/2016 season. “Yes it is true that we have agreed on a two-year deal. We only saw rumours of him leaving on social media, but it was not official because we had not sat down and discussed that with him,” the club secretary, City Senne told The Monitor Sport yesterday. Zapata managed to lead the team to the fifth place finish on the log despite having to work with limited squad. He had asked for several quality players ahead of the start of the just ended season, but his request could not be fulfilled because of the club’s financial situation. Following the departure of Nicholas Zakhem as investor in the club, GU faced turbulent times including late payments of players’ salaries. However they were boosted by Zakhem’s return but this time as a sponsor through his company, ZAC Construction.

Senne said this time they will break the bank if need be to bring in some quality additions to the current squad. He said the coach has identified several key positions that need to be filled and the players on his wish list. “We will look for those players because we really want to compete next season. We want to compete for one of the titles if not both next season,” he said. GU last won a title in 2015 when they lifted the Mascom Top 8 title.
