BNSC rejects wrestling on Re Ba Bona Ha

BNSC sport development-technical manager, Mission Mereyotlhe wrote to BWF stating that the Commission  does not have the resources to expand the number of national sport associations under the Debswana sponsored program.

“Although we regretfully send you an unfavorable response, we wish to advise you that you should not hesitate to re-submit the proposal for consideration in future,” the letter reads in part.

Speaking to Mmegi Sport, BWF president, Moagi Sharp did not hide his disappointment with the BNSC's decision.

“The decision is a blow to us. We expected them to assist us to achieve our strategic plan, which mostly focuses on grassroots development,” he said.

Sharp said they have aligned their strategic plan with that of the BNSC and the decision to close BWF out of the Re Ba Bona Ha is a shock. He said BWF is a new federation and most of its members are primary school pupils, particularly in Selebi-Phikwe and Palapye.

“We understand that they do not have money at the moment, but they could have just allowed us to be part of the program, so that when the situation improves they could finance us,” he said.

Sharp said equipment was not going to be a challenge as they were going to utilise what they already have.

Meanwhile, BWF has missed out on a maiden appearance at the Africa Wrestling Championship in Nigeria due to lack of funds.

“The organisers (Africa Wrestling Federation) had agreed to sponsor an athlete from here with a plane tickets and accommodation. The challenge we had is that we could not send a 15 year-old to Nigeria alone, without a coach due to security reasons,” he said.
