Zim woman dies in suspected abortion

The 36-year-old woman was an illegal immigrant who was arrested by Central Police last Tuesday during one of their ‘stop, question and search’ patrols.

On arrival at the station when interviewed with other suspects, the young woman indicated to them that she was on her monthly periods, but police were shocked to find in her possession Doctor Whites sanitary pads, normally used by women who are bleeding after either a successful or failed pregnancy term.

The police took her to Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) for a medical check-up and upon arrival doctors advised the police that she should be admitted to hospital for a blood transfusion because she had lost a lot of it.

Central Police station commander, superintendent Mothusi Phadi confirmed investigating the case stating that the young woman lost her life on Saturday after she was admitted at PMH amidst suspicions of an abortion.

“We suspect that she might have committed abortion or to have concealed a birth because she was found in possession of Doctor Whites (sanitary pads) even though she claimed to be menstruating,” Phadi said.

He said her body is still at PMH morgue and they are yet to inform her next of kin, as she had prior to her hospitalisation submitted a phone number for a contact person.
