Masinki told Mmegi Sport yesterday that the team has always been doing well in 7s and they were recently introduced to the 15s formation.

He said the focus is to see how the team would fair against other nations in future. He said with the women’s team, there are no disparities, when compared to their male counterparts.

“When we play against other teams like South Africa, we do not expect to lose with a big margin compared to the men’s team.

Development of women’s rugby is almost at the same level,” he said. Masinki said his side would travel to South Africa for another friendly match against the Leopards. He said it is unfortunate that the team is always assembled a few weeks before a national assignment, despite the calendar finalised on time.

Masinki said the average age of players in his squad is 22 and that is good for future development and planning.  Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) secretary general, Ernest Mantsi was pleased with the team’s performance.

“According to my observation they managed to play according to the game plan. They moved the ball wide to avoid a lot of contact thus creating the gaps that enabled them to win against their opponents,” he said.

He said the team comprised of some young players with experienced ones.

He said the mix enabled them to perform exceptionally well. Mantsi said the plan moving forward is to continue improving standards of the team.

Meanwhile, preparations for the Vultures would continue this Saturday when they host Rustenburg based gold cup champions, Impala at the UB stadium. The Vultures travel to Potchefstroom, South Africa for a training camp and matches against Currie cup side, Leopards on June 16.
