In an interview with Mmegi, the Botswana Police Service’s spokesperson, assistant commissioner Witness Bosija confirmed that they are investigating a case of a police officer alleged to have committed suicide in police cell at the Molepolole police station.

“Investigations on the matter are still at an initial stage and I cannot comment any further because we are yet to establish what really transpired that day but what I know is that he had used someone’s car without authority,” Bosija said. Asked whom the car belonged to and what the officer used to take his life, Bosija said investigations to establish those factors are still ongoing.

“We have not yet informed all of his relatives about his death hence could be inappropriate for them to read other things on newspapers,” Bosija said.

He said the deceased was stationed at the Thamaga police station and was detained for unlawful use of a motor vehicle at the Molepolole police station police cell when the incident occurred. Mmegi is informed that the deceased was investigating a case and is believed to have used the car that was part of the investigations for his own personal things.

It is reported that the owner of the car reported the matter to the police and the officer was arrested and detained. Speaking on condition of anonymity, other officers have revealed that the officer and others were facing charges of soliciting a bribery from a motorist.

Afraid of the possible outcomes of the case, the deceased who originates from Kanye, is alleged to have panicked and committed suicide.
