Senn Foods to the rescue in listeria scare

Senn Foods is a 33 year citizen owned meat company based in Tlokweng. While the company’s products are popular, Senn Foods’ stomping ground has come under pressure from cheaper South African cold meats over the years.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness yesterday closed the border on imports of Enterprise Food Production Factory and Rainbow Chicken Limited, after the two companies were identified as the source of the listeria outbreak that has killed nearly 200 people in South Africa.

The Ministry also ordered a recall of all polony, russian and vienna products, advising Batswana who have the items to return them to the shop for a full refund.

This morning, Senn Foods issued a statement reassuring customers that its products were safe to eat.

“Senn Foods prides itself on being the leading producer of fresh and processed meats in Botswana. Safe products of the highest quality are produced following good hygiene procedures as well as the strictest processing discipline.

“We would like to assure the public that our products are safe and we regularly test our products and manufacturing plants using independent laboratories to ensure that our products meet our strict expectations and that the mark of quality is retained.”

Meanwhile, Enterprise and Rainbow products have disappeared from shelves around the country. Choppies CEO, Ramachandran (“Ram”) Ottapathu told Mmegi that retail chain did not sell the two brands in Botswana due to “restrictions at the border”.
