BOCRA’s director of technical services, Seepelo Malefho, revealed this during the inaugural ICT skills, certification and entrepreneurship symposium held recently, which was organised, by Hlanganani ICT and E-Learning Botswana.

Malefho said that Government through BOCRA, is working on protecting the public from the cyber-bullying, adding that they are also working on developing public key infrastructure for management of secure electronic signatures.

On her part, the managing director of Hlanganani ICT and E-Learning Botswana, Boitshepo Bolele said that the aim of the training was to recognise the talent and innovation that unemployed youth has. She said that most youth are talented, but are not utilising their talents because they want to be employed.

“There is innovation in the country and I have just realised that amongst the unemployed graduates who are roaming the streets, most of them are from the ICT sector who are also waiting to get a job instead of coming up with apps that can transform their lifestyle and sustain themselves,” she said.

According to Bolele, they brought an expert in the ICT industry, the brain behind Craft Silicon, Budhabhatti Kamal, who has developed apps for Botswana Savings Bank (BSB) and Standard Chartered Bank in Botswana and other African countries.

“I have decided to bring Kamal looking at his portfolio and the fact that he started from nothing to be where he is today. I wanted someone who these youth can relate to looking at the fact that Kamal was once unemployed and took an option to do something to be what he is today,” he said.

In addition, she said that Kamal has promised to talk to Forbes Africa to cover the top 10 app developers who were identified by Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH).

She further urged youth to be their own bosses and use their talents to create jobs, thus reducing the reliance on Government to get employment.

Bolele, who started her company last year, said that a lot of corporates as well as individuals have shown keen interest in training, adding that it is a good sign as ICT can diversify the economy as well as create employment.

“Every individual should play a role in helping diversify the economy as well as mobilise the foreign direct investment by looking for partners across the globe,” she said.
