Serowe Meat And Leather Art Festival On The Cards

According to the organisers, the idea came about after realisation that Serowe is plagued by high unemployment especially of women, despite the vast resources and opportunities found in the area.

Speaking to Showbiz this week in Gaborone, event organiser and chairperson of Hand to Hand Enterprise, Samuel Tlhaodi said the festival intends to empower women and young artists while celebrating the diverse meat dishes common in the northern part of Botswana.

“We want to empower women in rural areas and promote agro-tourism in the area.

The event is also meant to encourage people to use under-utilised products to earn a living hence we have included exhibitions for artefacts made out of hides or animal skins.

There are no industries in Serowe, so this is a platform for those who are involved in food processing to get exposure,” he said.

Furthermore, Tlhaodi said the festival would promote agro-tourism.

Those who would attend should expect to taste at least four different meat dishes such as mokoto, seswaa, braai and Kalanga meat known as dobi.

Tickets for the event are sold at P20 for children and P30 for adults.

The VIP ticket, which would come with a coupon, is sold at P100. There will also be entertainment by different artists.

Also, said Tlhaodi, the event would be more of a family fun day with a number of activities lined up. The activities include donkey cart joy ride, face painting and beach volleyball.

However, he stated that the venue would be communicated in due course as they are still negotiating with the owners. 

He pleaded with corporate companies to partner with them and sponsor the event as it is for a noble course.
