Toropo ya Muka to ignite Ghetto

The festival is probably the biggest annual music outing in the entertainment calendar of the northern city.

The event started from humble beginnings two years ago at the Francistown Club where it pulled in only a handful of revellers. It moved to the Francistown Sports Complex for the second edition last year.

“Judging by last year’s huge turnout, we believe our target 6,000 is achievable for this edition,” Colastraw said when addressing the press conference recently.

Toropo ya Muka, like the recently successful Tlatsa Lebala, is an all-local line up.

It was formulated to answer a response to concerns by Ghetto artists, who felt marginalised and felt reduced to backbenchers by promoters who kept bringing South African artists and those from Gaborone for events right in their backyard.

Colastraw said he founded Toropo ya Muka not only to heed to the calls of Ghetto artists, but also to create a platform for good relations  for local artists both from the north and the south and to bring to the fore upcoming talent.

“My biggest concern has been upcoming artists.  I have seen talent end before it begins because of lack of platforms for growth.”

“As a producer and a DJ, I am exposed to talented young artists and it is a pity to see that talent going to waste.  I have witnessed such a trend on many occasions,” he said.

“There is enormous talent in the north and that is one major thing that has driven Toropo ya Muka.  It’s more about exposing upcoming artists.”

At the venue, gates will be open at 9am and the event kickstarts with five-a-side football tournaments that will be warming up the revellers for the night.

There will also be a charity match of the DJs, city councillors and people living with disabilities.

Every goal in the charity match contributes P100 towards charity.

The festival will be headlined by the man of the moment Kast, Crispin the Drummer, Scar, MC Maswe, DJ Guyvos, La Timmy amongst a rich lineup of local talent, and Leungo or ‘King B’ of Flava Dome will be the Master of Ceremony.
