The Lobatse Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday during a mention in a case in which at least eight former students face charges of malicious damage to property.

Leatile Ntwaetsile (19), Martin Chico (18), Moyombuya Sipho (18), Arnold Botlhoko (20) Tefo Mmualefhe (19), Tshenolo Serame (20) Modisaotsile Moretele (19) and Brian Motlhagatsane (19) are alleged to have assembled immediately after their examinations and went on a rioting spree. 

The students are alleged to have broken 25 classroom windows, destroyed an unquantified number of plumbing pipes before proceeding to damage at least four boys’ hostel doors.

The prosecutor in the case sub inspector Bakani Tsayang of Woodhall police station informed Lobatse chief Magistrate, Mareledi Dipate that the investigating office has met with the school authorities recently to draft a quotation, which established that the destroyed goods cost P300,000.

“The investigating officer has recently travelled to Moeding College to meet with the schools authorities to establish the cost of the property which was destroyed.

“The investigating officer informed me that the property costs P300,000 and he is still yet to meet the school authorities to establish a way forward,” he said.

The trial dates are due to be set and the case will mention on August 22. 

In another matter, the police are yet to receive a forensic affidavit from the police forensic laboratory in a case in which Woodhall 1 resident, Bokamoso Kono faces a charge of defilement involving an 11-year-old girl.

Kono is alleged to have on Friday October 2, 2016 had a sexual intercourse with the victim without her consent.

Tsayang said investigations are nearing completion. The case will mention on August 22.
