WIA celebrates Women's Day

The event was spearheaded by Career Coaching Botswana under the theme, #PressforProgress. The event brought together exceptional women from all fields such as technology, farming, arts, business and others. WIA performers spoiled the audience with different performances including poetry, dance, music and more.
Trust Art director, Neelo Lentebanye recited a unique and beautiful concept of self-poem titled I Am Inspired by a theatre production she did last year also titled I Am.
The poem was about a woman celebrating being a strong and beautiful female. It spoke of self-confidence, identity, her struggles, perseverance, her dreams and aspirations. It encouraged women to realise who they are and what they are capable of despite certain stereotypes and challenges they generally face in life.
“I Am is not an ordinary performance. We wanted to show a woman’s feelings through voice and movement. I was unapologetic when I wrote this poem. Women are beautiful beings capable of things unimaginable. We are the only ones capable of bringing progress in our own lives.As women we are capable of moving this world forward,” she said.
She added Women’s Day was important because it gives women the opportunity to reflect on themselves and celebrate who they are and the contributions they make in the society. She said from a young age, a girl needs to be taught to be vocal and be brought up in an environment where she will freely express herself and communicate whatever need she has to communicate. Meanwhile, Mumsy Themba who is a student at University of Botswana recited a poem that talked about‚ Holding On to emphasise the resilience in her heart. The poem had a twist that blew the audience away as it had dance choreography performed by talented Baratwa Phuthego. It also added songs sung by Bobedi Thobogang, the secretary of WIA Trust.
For her part, Lolo Koosaletse recited her poem that had famous Setswana notations, which are occasionally uttered for a traditional Setswana home set up, ‘Mosadi Ke Thari ya Sechaba’.
Amongst dignitaries that took part in the event were the Balete traditional leader, Kgosi Mosadi Seboko.
