BDP suspends truant cllrs

Secretary of BDP North West Region, Tebogo Domi Bethia confirmed to Mmegi that the BDP disciplinary committee has suspended Duncan Enga and Vepaune Moreti for 90 days. The suspensions were served on the duo on Thursday last week.

Recently Enga and Moreti who were not endorsed by a party caucus went and contested for council leadership elections. Enga beat Reaboka Mbulawa who had been chosen by the caucus for the NWDC chairmanship while Moreti won the deputy chairmanship for the Maun Administrative Authority, beating Nico Folae who had also been chosen by the caucus.

The Maun Administrative Authority is a subordinate council to the NWDC.

Enga was not immediately available for comment at the time of going to press. In an interview, Moreti confirmed receipt of the suspension letter. However he was not in a position to divulge further details regarding whether he will appeal the decision or not.

The duo is said to be aligned to Nonofo Molefhi who will be contesting the BDP chairmanship against incumbent Vice President Masisi. Insiders believe the NWDC chairmanship race was decided on account of factionalism between councillors supporting Masisi and Molefhi. The suspension means they will miss voting at the congress.

A source close to the issue advised BDP to be extra careful to avoid the duo crossing to opposition parties citing their support by the opposition to win the council elections. “This is not the time to be dividing our voters. We need to be careful with how we deal with the problem.”

The decisions of a BDP caucus are binding by nature. Defying a party caucus can lead to possible expulsion. Following events in the NWDC, the BDP issued a memo calling all the councillors to respect caucus decisions. “The regions across the country are also encouraged to see to it that caucus decisions are implemented as agreed,” reads the letter in part.
