The BNF spokesperson Justin Hunyepa said the councillors during their caucus did not show interest to contest for position of deputy mayor.

Jwaneng Town Council has nine councillors. Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), which BNF is affiliated to, has six councillors while Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has three councillors.

The elections for the new mayor and deputy were held last Thursday, where Obed Monkge of UDC was elected the new mayor while his deputy is Olga Ditsie of the BDP. Ditsie is the first woman to become a deputy mayor.

“The position of deputy mayor was left vacant for anyone to contest for at the council. The UDC councillors agreed during caucus that they would support any councillors who might put his name for deputy mayor.

Unfortunately, there is no one from UDC who had interest even during the elections at council.

Then the BDP fielded the name for deputy which was unopposed,” Hunyepa said.

Hunyepa said the report they received from the delegation, which had gone to observe the council caucus also shows that UDC had interest only in one post, which is the Mayor.

“The only councillor who did not attend the caucus was the former Mayor, Tsietsi Oodira Kwenje and we did not know the reason. They called the second meeting, which the report we got is that he did not attend. The caucus meeting was held on May 16,” he said.
