CAAB To Host The 4th ICAO AFI Aviation Week

Member States and selected international organisations in the aviation and related industries, have been invited to participate in these events aimed at developing appropriate strategies and providing the necessary support towards the enhancement of the aviation system in the AFI Region.

The ICAO delegation to the events will be led by the Secretary General of the Organisation.

‘The event will host different meetings; The Fourth Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) Aviation Safety Symposium, the 19th Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Safety in Africa (AFI Plan) Steering Committee Meeting, the Second AFI Security Symposium and the Fifth Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Security and Facilitation (AFI SECFAL Plan) Steering Committee Meeting.

‘The objective of the Fourth AFI Aviation Safety Symposium which will be held on the 22nd May will be to review the status of implementation of the various ICAO safety initiatives for Africa, share success stories and challenges, and agree on relevant strategies to further enhance safety in the region.

This will be followed on the 23rd May by the 19th Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Safety in Africa (AFI Plan) Steering Committee Meeting whose objective is to review activities of the AFI Plan work programme and in particular the status of implementation of the Abuja safety targets and 2016/2017 goals” highlighted Geoffrey Moshabesha, CAAB Chief Executive Officer.

‘The 24th  May will see the convention of the Second AFI Security Symposium which aims to provide an overview on ICAO Assembly Resolution A39-38 on aviation security, various ICAO security and facilitation initiatives for Africa, emerging security threats, share success stories and challenges, capacity building and agree on relevant strategies to further enhance security in the region” Moshabesha explained.

“The Fifth Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Security and Facilitation (AFI SECFAL Plan) Steering Committee Meeting will conclude the meetings on the 25th May, to review activities of the implementation of the AFI SECFAL Plan work programme and in particular the Windhoek Declaration and Targets,” concluded Moshabesha.

One of the key highlights of the meetings is expected to be the ceremonial Presentation of Certificate of Excellence to Botswana by the ICAO Secretary General, for the country’s progress in resolving safety oversight deficiencies and continued improvement of the effective implementation (EI) of applicable ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS).
