Judgement due in Gantsi rape, robbery, murder case

 

The grisly case grabbed headlines during the trial held in late July last year.

The duo, who were employed at Leon Vorster’s farm as labourers, allegedly mounted an assault on the homestead on January 31 2014, where they sexually assaulted a victim.

They are alleged to have robbed Reinette Vorster, their former employer of a Toyota Hilux valued at P300,000, two cellphones and cash amounting to P11,000 an act which they are alleged to have committed using violence.

The State alleges that the duo proceeded to murder Reinette Vorster before burning here body in a Toyota Hilux D4D, a vehicle she was allegedly driving from her farm on her way to Gantsi.

The two men also face a count of malicious damage to property in connection with the burning of the car.

Kgalalelo was arrested on February 3 at Vorster’s farm while Mpe was arrested the following day in a nearby village.

The two have been remanded in custody.  During the trial, the state called a total of 18 witnesses including, amongst others, Gantsi District detective superintendent, a forensic pathologist and the investigating officer.  Gijima Archibald represents Kgalalelo whilst Themba Joina is representing Mpe. Lezibo Emang of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) represents the State.
