This move according to the Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism Tshekedi Khama would accord other business communities to benefit from it as well.

“The event, which has over the years experienced growth in terms of participation and attendance, has also contributed to the economic gains of the society especially the business community where we usually hold it,” he said.

Further he said that the desert race which still features as one of the feeder races to the Dakar Rally will this year host the director of the Dakar Rally as well as his team.

He said that this year’s event signals the start of the journey in their endeavour to have the event registered in the international events calendar by the year 2020.

“This therefore means we have to pull all stops to ensure the event matches international standards as it will be assessed for this accreditation and listing annually,” he said.

Further he said that this year’s race, which is the biggest in the regional off road series, would see a record number of participants, as the motorbikes section of the race has been admitted in the regional competition.

This year’s event, which would be held for the last time at Jwaneng, would still be hosted under the ‘Don’t spoil it campaign’ from June 23 to June 25, 2017. BTO would this year host the race in partnership with Botswana Motor Sports (BMS), Southern Africa National Off-Road Car Racing Association (SANORA), MASCOM and Jwaneng Town Council (JTC).

“Campgrounds will be provided. Information relating to accommodation packages will be communicated on various media”
