The district chairperson, Florah Mpetsane, and her deputy, Dikitso Mandevu were sworn to their previous positions unopposed on Friday.  However, controversy nearly erupted after one of the BDP councillors fingered specially elected councillor, Matlhodi Modisapodi for the position of deputy council chairperson.

It was not clear who, from the councillors, nominated Modisapodi. Throughout the nomination process she sat inside the council chambers and never went outside like her colleagues, for a brief 15 minutes party caucus.

Modisapodi however declined her nomination, which then automatically meant that Mandevu sailed to his position unopposed like Mpetsane. Giving her acceptance speech, Mpetsane thanked the councillors for giving her another two-and-half years to head the council.

“I thank you very much for the trust you have on me. I thank you for having trust in my abilities. I know there are challenges ahead, but when there are challenges, there are also solutions. Some of our main challenges in the district include shortage of water, bad roads and the welfare of people of our district which can be solved by various Government programmes,” said an optimistic Mpetsane.

She concluded her short speech by asking all councillors from across the political spectrum to work together as a team in order to overcome their challenges.

In his acceptance speech, Mandevu also thanked the councillors for giving him another term to lead them. “Thank you for retaining us to lead you again. This shows that you trust us and we pledge to serve you and our people to the best of our abilities. Of course, there will be challenges but together we can overcome them,” he said.
