The outgoing BMD youth league secretary general, Tolerance Itumeleng has given his party 72 hours to have announced the dates for the BMD youth congress. The issue regarding the youth congress was last week deferred to the NEC meeting on May 20. This comes hardly after some youth within the party held their own congress to elect a new leadership of the youth league.

“Client informs us that on the 29th of April 2017, the BMD National Working Committee was presented with a report of the BMDYL NEC, which postponed the BMDYL congress.

Upon consideration of the report and submissions of the BMDYL representatives, the BMD National Working Committee accepted the report of the BMDYL NEC and endorsed the decision,” Itumeleng said through Makhabenyana Attorneys.

The letter says as a result of the postponement, client still retains his position as the secretary general and his seat in the NEC until a lawfully sanctioned congress is held.

It further says their client informed them that a group of party dissidents disregarded the decision of the party to postpone the congress and instead held an unlawful gathering at Ramotswa where they purported to be electing the new youth league.

“Client informs us that on the 06 of May 2017, the NEC met to deliberate on the usual business of the party in terms of the BMD constitution. We are informed that at the said meeting, client was removed from the meeting by reason that there was a parallel representation of the Youth League at the NEC meeting,” the letter says.

His attorney said it is common cause that their client intends to defend his position as secretary general of the BMDYL at the 2017 youth league congress, which has been postponed indefinitely.

The letter says as it stands their clients standing as a member of the BMD NEC is disregarded by the party and the BMD NEC.

Itumeleng’s attorney says NEC is reluctant, unwilling and or refusing to announce a date at which the 2017 BMDYL congress will be held to enable client to exercise his rights and contest for the youth league position and as a result, client is disenfranchised.

He says they are certain party members hold themselves as being duly elected youth leaders at the Ramotswa gathering.

“We are informed that such members claim to be discharging functions and powers pursuant to the BMDYL constitution,” it says.
