First winter cold front set to hit

The front is driven from Johannesburg, where residents there are equally in for a frosty weekend.

Yesterday, the Department of Meteorological Services said the Southern Kgalagadi area would experience a drop in temperatures.

In the capital, minimum temperatures could drop to 12 over the weekend, with maximums of 19oC.

Principal Technical Officer (Forecasting), Olebogeng Molosiwa said over the weekend and into Monday, temperatures in the Southern Kgalagadi area would drop to a minimum six degrees Celsius and a maximum of 19oC.

“On Sunday, we expect the cold air to move to the Southern part of the country. Maximum temperatures in Gaborone could drop to 19oC.

“Temperatures could drop further to six degrees Celsius in Gaborone and surrounding areas on Monday before improving gradually thereafter,” he said.

Meanwhile, the department has forecast a relatively mild winter countrywide this season, with very cold conditions expected towards the end of the season and extending into the month of August.

However, cold spells will be experienced from time to time during this period over some areas in the southern half of the country.
