Suspected 'Facebook rapist' granted bail

Accused: Dropper Monna

Accused: Dropper Monna

The State alleges that Dropper Monna, 33, a former security officer, raped his first victim on March 1, 2018 at Block 5 and robbed her of a black Lenovo cellphone worth P599.

Monna who allegedly uses multiple Facebook accounts is also charged with raping his second victim also at Block 5.

He allegedly raped his victims at knifepoint.  On Wednesday, Sergeant Keneilwe Moruti told Chief Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu that the State was not opposed to Monna being granted conditional bail.

She added that investigations into the matter were still continuing.

The accused pleaded with the court to grant him bail because life in prison was harsh. “The prosecution is not even certain when it will complete its investigations while I am rotting in jail. I promise to abide by all the conditions the court will impose,” he added.

Mulalu granted Monna bail on condition that he pays P1,000, reports at Kutlwano police once every month and attends court as and when required to do so. Monna will appear in court again on May 8 for status report.

In one of his Facebook accounts, Monna claims to be a special constable with Botswana Police Service based at Kutlwano Police Station.

The police suspect that Monna’s victims may have fallen prey to his tactics because he met them in front of Kutlwano after making appointments to meet them.

The police shot Monna in the leg at some thickets at Block 4 when he tried to escape when the police wanted to arrest him.

By then Monna was high on the list of people wanted by the police after the two women reported him for each of their rape and robbery.
