Boxers to take part in SA tourney

The team of three women and 14 men was invited by the DSCUD boxing, a local boxing club that promotes professional and amateur boxers.
DSCUD was invited to participate in the boxing tournament by the South African boxing club. Co-founder of DSCUD, Thuso Khubamang said since they want to see boxing develop in Botswana, they saw it fit to extend an invitation to Prisons and DTC boxing clubs to take part.
“We have chosen boxers from these two clubs because we deal with them everyday, they train with us. Most of them are in the national team, which will benefit a lot because it will be part of their preparations towards bigger competitions,” Khubamang said.
The international competition comes at a time when the Botswana Boxing Association (BOBA) missed the Zone IV championship, which took place in Angola, due to lack of funds.
The DSCUD boxing club aims to produce quality of both professional and amateur boxers through the high standard of equipment they have in order to develop and produce quality boxers.
Speaking at an event to announce the launch of DSCUD in Gaborone on Tuesday, Khubamang said the aim was to bring the boxers together.
He said the club was formed at the beginning of the year with the objective to push up the level of boxing in Botswana and also give opportunities to boxers to participate in international competitions.
He said they also give professional boxers a platform to fight internationally. “We also want to introduce more people in our boxing training sessions, which are one of the best and toughest fitness training.
There is also endurance and weight management training for other sports,” Khubamang said.
He said they are still looking for sponsors for their Johannesburg trip. Two coaches will accompany the team to observe the boxers throughout the tournament.
BOBA president, Orapeleng Mosalakgotla said the exposure would highlight Botswana boxing to the different stakeholders to assist in development and continuity of the sport. He said as the association they appreciate what DSCUD is doing for local boxing, therefore he urged local boxing clubs to make use of the high standard equipment that DSCUD is providing.
“In order for international clubs to continue inviting us, our boxers should remain disciplined all the time. This will help them to excel internationally, hence they help BOBA to achieve its objectives,” Mosalakgotla said.
Meanwhile, the association would host their fourth interclub tournament in Gaborone on Saturday.
