Three members of a family, (a father, mother and son) died instantly from the blaze in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Now, the 13-year-old daughter who was hospitalised at PMH with severe injuries has also died.

The fire, whose cause is still unknown, killed a 44-year-old woman and her six-year-old son, on the spot. Her 55-year-old husband passed away in hospital on Saturday, leaving the 13-year-old as the sole survivor.

The blaze destroyed the family’s two-roomed house, leaving it in ashes. Yesterday, Mmegi was informed that the teenager lost her life while waiting to be transported to South Africa for further medical attention.

The deceased could have been airlifted to South Africa on Tuesday, but the trip failed, as she did not have a passport. Modiredi Sebopelo, a family member, told Mmegi that their family, together with the hospital, were busy processing travel documents for her when she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

“We are hurting and confused because the cause of fire is not yet known,” Sebopelo said.

Sebopelo said their hope lies with the police as Thamaga Police station commander, Moses Makgoeng confirmed the last survivor’s death.

He too said they did not know the cause of the inferno as investigations had just begun.

Police in the area are said to have vowed not to rest until they ascertain the cause of the blaze.
