On Thursday, May 11 at 10am, Ambassador Miller will tour the Gabane Community Home Based Care’s (GCHBC) preschool in Gabane. GCHBC is a community organisation which was established in 1997 to provide home care to people living with AIDS.

The organisation has since evolved to support a wide range of population groups affected by the disease. One of GCHBC’s programmes is a preschool in which half of the children pay school fees to support the facility and the other half are orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs).

The students mix together and there is no social stigma for being an OVC in the preschool. Through a President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) grant totaling $11,170 we funded a printer/copier for the office, kitchen equipment (an industrial size stove and refrigerator), a data projector, a TV, furniture, and educational materials for the preschool.

The printer will enable teachers to print important classroom materials and the office will be able to print invoices for paying parents.

The new, large refrigerator allows the preschool to store milk, yoghurt and fresh fruits and vegetables, providing more varied and more nutritious meals for the children.

The educational materials and new furniture will improve the learning environment for the children. The projector and the TV allow the children to watch educational programs on Btv and introduce digital learning into the curriculum.

This project was implemented by a Peace Corps Volunteer who resides in Gabane. The Ambassador will tour the facility, meet the children and board members of the organisation and officially hand over the purchased items.
