Makwala powers to Commonwealth gold

Tucked in the inside lane, Makwala sprung away and was never in danger of being caught, as he eased into the lead at the final bend.
The result was never in doubt and he crossed the finish line in 44.55 seconds, with countryman Baboloki Thebe second in a time of 45.09sec. Javon Francis, of Jamaica, was third in 45.11sec.
The Botswana team has set its sights on eight medals, and with Amantle Montsho and Christine Botlogetswe still to run the women's 400m final tomorrow, hopes remain high.
Nijel Amos is another medal hopeful, while a lot is expected from both the men and women's 4x400m relay teams.
While Makwala and Thebe soared, there was disappointment earlier in the day as Pako Seribe and Karabo Mothibi pulled out with injuries, while Galefele Moroko failed to progress in the 400m.
