It takes time for most girls and young women to perfect their walk and posture when wearing those stilettos while some give them up entirely.

However, the fear to wear heels in public because you cannot walk on them can be the thing of the past because young Motswana Baone Serojane saw it fit to open a Stiletto Academy where she can teach women how to walk in heels.

“When Merlin Monroe said, ‘Give a girl the right pair of shoes and, she can conquer the world and she can conquer the world’” we are fairly certain she was talking about heels. But we are here to assist those who can’t walk in heels.

Our school is basically aimed at teaching women the fundamental techniques and skills of walking and dancing in high heels. The class teaches about navigating obstacles, taking long strides, perfecting posture and movement,” she said confidently.

She said any woman who has navigated the Gaborone streets in sky-high stilettos can tell that walking in high heels is hard work. She explained that she therefore found it imperative to launch a class on “How to Walk in High Heels’’ where she is determined to teach women the basic skills of walking in heels.

Serojane said the class was designed to teach women how to navigate tricky terrain and to walk heel to toe, engage abs, take long strides, relax hips and knees and remember to stretch calves and ankles to avoid cramping up, all while pitched forward on their heels.

“Wearing heels make women look more stylish, confident and tall, which is why we came up with such an idea. Heels are also empowering. You’re an advantage immediately, job interviews, on stage, everything. You need to be fit to walk in heels with stability, so I recommend stiletto owners to practice walking in their shoes before hitting the city streets. I don’t recommend very long heels that appear in fashion magazines and runways.

Most women do not want to hear this but anything more than three inches is really dangerous,” she said.

When giving tips on walking better in heels, the young woman said it was important to make sure one is wearing the proper shoe size. She added that wearing a proper shoe size improves foot health.

“But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s some expert advice that will help us walk a little better in heels. Size matters, first and foremost, you want to make sure your heels or any other shoe, for that matter, is the proper size. You also have to be conscious of the rest of your body. Engage your abs, this gives you poise and control.”

“You also need some time out. Whenever, wherever you can sit!

There is no shame at all in taking a seat now and then. It gives your feet a chance to rest so when you’re on your feet, you’ll be able to walk more comfortably,” she advised. She will be hosting classes in Gaborone City Council’s Civic Centre on May 20, 2017.

Entrance fee will be P150 per individual. All participants are encouraged to bring their high heels not higher than three inches.
