Serowe police acting station commander, assistant superitendent Molefhe Molefhe said the accident happened when the deceased and a passenger were travelling from here to Serowe.

He said they suspect that the driver died when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a nearby tree, in the process injuring the passenger.

“The driver died on the spot while a 29-year-old male passenger sustained minor injuries,” he said.

Even though the police could not confirm the cause of the accident, eyewitnesses suggest that the man lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a stray cow.

“For now I am not in a position to state what the driver might have been avoiding on the road because the investigations are still on-going.”

Molefhe said that they are not yet certain if the two were related, but he said they have since established that they both originate from Palapye.  “We have so far drawn some blood samples from the deceased to do some tests to check for alcohol,” he said.

He raised concern over increasing number of road accidents in the jurisdiction of Serowe Police saying recently they recorded two fatal accidents.

In the first incident a 14-year-old boy lost his life after an overloaded Toyota Sedan motor vehicle he was travelling in along with his 10 church-mates hit three cows and overturned near Mogorosi village.

Apparently, the driver of the motor vehicle was a 44-year-old police officer based at Mogorosi Kgotla. All the passengers in his car were teenagers aged between 11 and 14 years.

In another accident, Molefhe said a 30-year-old man allegedly hanged himself after accidentally hitting his 2 year-old nephew with a seven tonne truck leading to his death at Masilo ward in Serowe while on a mission to collect pit sand.
