Debswana employee commits suicide

According to Letlhakane Police station commander, Michael Maphephu the deceased did not leave behind a suicide note.

“From what we have gathered although we cannot establish if it is the cause of the suicide, the victim had earlier crushed into someone‘s car and ran before hanging himself.

We do suspect that this might have influenced the deceased to commit suicide,” Maphephu said.

He added that this is the first suicide incident they have recorded since the beginning of the year.

He advised people to always involve a third party whenever they have problems so that they find help instead of taking their own lives, which is never a solution.

Meanwhile, Maphephu decried defilement cases in his area of jurisdiction stating that they are growing at an alarming rate. He said that this month (May) they have recorded five cases of defilement in Letlhakane.

“Two of the victims tested positive for pregnancy, which is very sad because they are still students and that means their education is going to be disrupted,” he added.

He attributed excessive alcohol consumption among youths as a catalyst to the increase in defilement cases.

Maphephu said parents are also to blame as it shows that they take lightly the welfare of their children and most importantly they do not monitor their movement.

Still in Letlhakane, Maphephu said that they are investigating a case in which a 35-year-old man raped a woman of the same age on Saturday night.

The suspect met with the woman after bars were closed and the victim appeared to have been drinking from the same bar as the suspect, who then allegedly dragged her to a nearby bush and raped her.

The suspect is in police custody and will make his first Court appearance today.
