Even though the comedy night started late at low steam, the fifth annual Hicofest (Heavyweight International Comedy Festival) turned out to be a blast.

The talented Master of Ceremony (MC) and comedian, Clive Chigubhu from Zimbabwe kept the audience captivated with his endless jokes. The clearly talented young man warmed the hearts of the audience with his animating jest where his home country, Zimbabwe was the butt of his jokes.

One of the witticism that got the audience laughing their lungs out was when Chigubhu talked about his fellow Zimbabweans queueing up for almost everything.  He said one day when going to a shopping complex with his mother, they saw people waiting in a long queue and his mother asked him to join the queue.

After waiting for hours when he was about to enter, he said he realised that people were queueing up to see a dead person.

“I was embarrassed and angry at the same time. I waited patiently for hours in that line hoping that the government was donating something worthy,” he said in a funny tone.

He made jokes about the currency saying that in ‘Zim’ they have a number of poor billionaires. He said even though other countries’ currencies become millions when exchanged to Zimbabwean dollars, they are worthless when changed back to those countries’ money.  He did an imitation of President Ian Khama’s tlhomela dance, which got the audience teary-eyed and in stitches.

Lesotho’s Masapo also kept the audience laughing with jokes that were mainly about his slim body and the challenges that he faces in relationships that he said he is hopeless when it comes to them.  Masapo joked about how he dated a slim woman and was forced to leave her due to people’s nasty comments.

He said in one occasion they were told that they looked like number 11.  He said things got worse when they tried to bend a little so that they do not look like the number 11, but the nasty comments continued as they were told they looked like the letter M.

His attempt to look for a fat partner became a nightmare as he was the laughing stock of his family. He said when told to lift up their partners for a family picture, his cousins were able to pick their partners while his girlfriend decided to lift him up because he was the lightweight.

Some of the comedians who cracked the audience’s ribs were locals Thapelo Malani and K-Lo.

Fredi Lilius from Finland and Rich from United States of America also treated the audience to their funny jokes.
