The Order of the Companions of OR Tambo recognises eminent foreign nationals for friendship shown to South Africa. According to media reports it is therefore an Order of peace‚ cooperation and active expression of solidarity and support.

Masire will be honoured posthumously for his exceptional contribution to the struggle for peace and liberation in South Africa‚ Mozambique‚ Rwanda and the Southern African region. He worked tirelessly in ensuring that Africans are liberated from oppression and colonial rule. 

National Orders are the highest awards that South Africa bestows on people who have contributed to the advancement of democracy and made an impact on improving the lives of South Africans. They also recognise contributions by individuals to a non-racial‚ non-sexist‚ democratic and prosperous South Africa as envisaged in the Constitution.
