The event had to be put on hold after the orgainsers, Joel ‘Spitz Phoenix’ Mosimanyana and Maya Rose left the country last year. The event returned this year with a number of sessions being hosted at Biber Baron.

Upon his return from USA, Spitz Phoenix teamed up with two poets, Kgotla Molefe and Onx Seben to resurrect the open mic event.

“In the absence of Maya I had a chat with Kgotla Molefe and Onx Seben to resurrect the Final Kut. But this time around we settled for once in a month event. We chose the first Sunday of every month. Three artists make The Final Kut line up and they are complemented by open mic entrants,” he said.

The event makes a return at a time when open mic sessions are becoming extinct in Gaborone. Upon its return this year the event has hosted the likes of Kabo Leburu Wa Katara, Debbie with a T, Tafnaz and Mandisa Mabutho. Seben is currently the host of the event as he has experience in hosting poetry events such as spoken word and poetry slam events.

Spitz Phoenix noted that the event’s objective is to give local artists and upcoming talent a platform.

“The journey has been long and some of these artists have gone on to make a name for themselves on broader platforms. Some have released EP’s and some albums.”

The event is mainly attended by spoken word lovers and open mic entrants that are still testing their capabilities on stage.

Spitz Phoenix noted that they are working on establishing a website for the open mic session event and also create a TV online platform to broadcast the various performances.

The next session of The Final Kut will be held this coming Sunday at Biber Baron, starting at 5pm till 10pm.
