The other accused, Mompati Moremedi was acquitted and discharged because of lack of evidence. When delivering judgement, Principal Magistrate, Dumisane Basupi said that the three men attacked the night watchman who was guarding the church when the offence was committed.

“On the night of the incident, Khumalo approached the security guard and told him that it was their time to do their work. Makosana detained the night watchman as Mabika and Khumalo blasted the church safe,” said Basupi.

When confronted by the police, Mabika who says he has a business of selling jewellery, said the foreign currencies belonged to his business.

The currencies include Australian dollars, cents, Namibian dollars, Malawian kwacha, Chinese yen and British pound, said Basupi. Basupi said Mabika was at sixes and sevens to explain where and how he exactly came to possess the money. Mabika failed to give satisfactory answers when asked by the prosecution to explain how he came to possess the foreign currencies.

“He said he got them from his Nigerian friend but I will not take his statement as the truth,” said Basupi. Basupi added that Makosana and Mabika were not trustworthy people because they kept on changing their statements in a bid to mislead the Court.

Basupi said he was satisfied that the prosecution has proved its case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt and therefore he found them guilty as charged.

Basupi ordered that the three convicted men be remanded in custody and be finger printed to check if they have previous offences or not.
