Man Drives Over A Friend, Killing Him

The deceased was discovered by a passerby lying in a pool of blood with head injuries in front of the gate.

Gaborone West Police Station Traffic Officer Assistant Superintendent, Comfort Mpuchane, confirmed the incident to The Monitor.

“We rushed him to Princess Marina Hospital where he was certified dead,” Mpuchane said.

Mpuchane said they received the report from a passerby around 4am on April 22, 2017.  Mpuchane stated that post mortem results verified that the car ran over him and he sustained injuries on the head, which ultimately killed him.

He continued; “in an inquest into the death of the deceased, some members of the community informed us that the deceased was last seen with his friend at some entertainment place drinking alcohol”.

Mphuchane said they went to the deceased’s 44-year-old best friend’s place and found him sleeping.

Mphuchane said they tested the friend and discovered that he was too drunk.

When questioned by the police the deceased’s friend confirmed that they were together and that he dropped him (the deceased) home.

“The deceased’s friend said that when reversing he heard a barrier, but thought it was a stone and drove over it without checking and went home to sleep not knowing he had driven over his friend,” Mpuchane said.

He stated that the duo are reported to be close friends in Gaborone West Phase 1 location and staying about 100 meters apart from each other.

Despite this, the police said they do not suspect any foul play in this matter.

He said the two friends were just drunk.

“Investigations on this matter are ongoing. Like the deceased’s friend said, it appears that when reversing he ran over the deceased with his car and killed him,” Mpuchane said.

He said they have released the deceased’s friend, adding that he will soon appear in court on a charge of causing death by driving a motor vehicle whilst his alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit.

Mpuchane raised a concern about drivers who cause unnecessary accidents in his policing area.

“We are concerned about motorists who drive with excessive speed, and running through red traffic lights and cause unnecessary accidents that mostly claim people’s lives,” Mpuchane said.

He also raised a concern about pedestrians with the habit of walking in the middle of the road at night drunk, as they put their lives at risk of being involved in fatal accidents.
