Botswana comedians M.O.D, Bambino and Triccs joined an impressive high profile line-up of comedians such as South Africans Chris Mapane, Skholo Mayisa, Kingflat Mametja and Zimbabwean Brian Sibanda to present the Soweto International Comedy Festival as part of the Maitisong Festival.

Hosts M.O.D and Chris Mapane were in their elements on the night, cracking jokes about almost everything.  The two showed their experience, keeping revellers on the edge as they directed proceedings.

M.O.D made references to presidents, women and men’s behaviour, love and sex issues. He also gave theories on everyday life. He made jokes about his life as a married man. He had the crowd in stitches with some shedding tears with his rib-cracking jokes.

Throughout the night, comedians displayed their material with much enthusiasm and determination. However, Bambino, the man the crowd looked out for; famed for his Facebook jokes did not live up to his standard. He is the only one amongst the comedians whose comics did not make the crowd laugh.

Like M.O.D, rising comedian Triccs entertained revellers with what he calls the kasi-oriented jokes. The self-proclaimed lenyora was a marvel to watch as he cracked jokes about his lifestyle in the township and his younger brother. Upon stepping up on stage, Triccs said, “I understand we have white people in our audience. But unfortunately I did not prepare my English. So I am going to put together all horrible English terms into one thing and just throw it at you. You gonna have to be ready to take it,” he said. He joked about what township boys look out for in a ‘girl’ before they could propose love to her.

“Ko kasi re lebelela kgokgotsho,” he said. The headline act Kingflat Mametja also did not disappoint, as he straightaway brought the house down with his jokes. He joked about his physical appearance. He said although God did not give him the good looks and height, he handsomely made for it by giving him a big penis, something that left many in stitches.

One could just tell that the show lived up to its hype as evidenced by the lively crowd, which seemed to laugh their lungs out whenever each comedian stepped on stage. Despite the audience consisting of people of different races and backgrounds, the comedians managed to engage them as the roaring laughter in the theatre attested.
