Teen Loses Life In Vehicle Accident

In an interview with The Monitor, Broadhurst police station commander Obusitswe Lokae revealed that the teenage girl died on the spot after being hit by a speeding car.

The victim, whose parents managed to identify her and was the resident of Tsholofelo location was with her three females friends when she meet her fate. The Monitor has learnt that together with her friends, the deceased tried to cross the road whist the traffic lights had opened for the cars. It is alleged that the deceased who was behind her friends, but panicked and tried to return back but unfortunately the car hit her.

“We received the report of the accident but sadly when we arrived at the scene the teenage girl was no more. Looking at the damages of the car and the injuries that the deceased sustained it appears that the driver of the car was overspreading,” Lokae said.

The police boss said the deceased’s names are still withheld, as the matter is still fresh and they are yet to inform all of her family members.

He stated that the 25-year-old driver is currently in custody helping the police with investigations and is likely to face the offense of causing death by dangerous driving.

He said that the deceased’s body is currently at Princess Marina Hospital awaiting post mortem results.

“Even through the accident occurred when the man had right of way as the traffic lights had opened for him the accident occurred in a built in area where drivers are expected to be observant at all times. We expect drivers to be cautious at all times as pedestrians especially children as are likely to cross the road at any time,” Lokae said.

Lokae said they have observed excessive speed on most of the roads around town pleading with drivers to obey the road sings and to drive with a minimum speed at all times.

He said that serious accidents where lives are lost on the road have been minimum for quite sometime in his policing area pleading with drivers to be extra cautious at all times when driving.
