The league features four clubs from each of the men and women’s sections. The competition will run for about two months.

Speaking at the official launch of the league, BBC president Terence Tiroyakgosi said the association has been pushing hard for the league to start and their hard work has paid off.

He said the federation has been struggling to find a venue for the competition.

“One of the greatest challenges was finding venues for our games, but we have managed to talk to the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) to help us with facilities,” Tiroyakgosi said. He said they will continue marketing the sport in the general society in order to attract both sponsors and athletes for the development of the sport in Botswana.

Despite the fact that the federation has been struggling to find venues for the league, they have been promoting the sport. They produced 11 local officials and attracting three sponsors. Zambezi Motors, Debonairs Pizza and Khuzi Catering and Events Management are the sponsors.

Tiroyakgosi said as part of growing the sport, the BBC held a clinic for match officials and 11 referees were recruited who will handle the league matches. Players have been urged to be highly involved in promoting the sport. BBC vice president, Bakang Mosikare said players should abide by the black ball rules and regulations throughout the competition to ensure the smooth running of the league.

Winners of the league will walk away with P10,000, while P5,000 has been reserved for the runners-up with third place guaranteeing P2,000.

He said the prize money should motivate pool fans to form clubs for the next league competition.

The four competing clubs in the current campaign are UB, Botho University, Acres and Matsubutsubu, for both women and men.
