Soldier dies in car crash

The accident occurred along Molepolole/Thebephatshwa road around 6pm according to the assistant station commander of Molepolole Police Station, Salome Segale in an interview with Mmegi.

Even though the police could not disclose further details of the accident, sources say the victim might have fallen asleep and was awoken by the sound of the car hitting a rabbit. It is believed that he might have panicked resulting in loss of control of the car before hitting a tree.

It is reported that the deceased was travelling from Molepolole to Thebephatshwa Air Base when the tragedy struck. He was declared dead at the scene and the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.

“Investigations on this matter are still at initial stage and I cannot at this point disclose anything to the media. We are yet to inform his family members, hence could not disclose any details of the accident until we have notified them,” Segale said.

Segale said despite recording this mishap, accidents of this nature in her policing area have been low for sometime. “For sometime it has been cool in our policing area without accidents that claim people’s lives. Even in the just passed Easter holidays we did not record any fatal accidents, something which is a welcome development as our main wish is not to lose lives on the road,” Segale said.

Segale said that they have observed excessive speed on the road, pleading with drivers to obey road signs and to drive with a minimum speed. She said drivers should be aware of livestock especially cattle and donkeys when driving at night, not to drink and drive and ensure that vehicles are road worthy before taking on a journey and to rest when traveling, as fatigue has in the past contributed a lot to most of the fatal accidents.
