The station commander for Gerald police Superintendent Edward Leposo told Mmegi that the alleged suspect in the matter is a Motswana man aged between 30 and 40 while the complainant is a Zimbabwean man aged between18 to 20.

Leposo was cagey with details surrounding the matter save to say that investigations were still at their initial stages. The station commander said inmates should feel free to report any sexual offences they may experience in prison to authorities so that the perpetrators may answer for their criminal actions.

He added that the law protects inmates and other members of society equally and as such, it is imperative for the inmates to inform prison authorities when they are sexually abused in prison so that the police can start investigations into the alleged transgressions.

Rape in Botswana prisons is a common incident. In the past local human rights organisations advocated for inmates to be provided with condoms to stem the spread of sexually transmitted diseases in prisons but their pleas hit a snag. Meanwhile, the jubilee celebrations of Botswana Defence Force (BDF) ended in agony for a family of Bluetown location after one of them was hit by car on Saturday and later succumbed to injuries on Monday.

The 51-year-old man was among multitudes of people who went to the Francistown Sports Complex to enjoy the various military activities that were performed by the army personnel on Saturday.

The acting station commander of Tatitown police Clarkson Mbereki said they could not reveal the names of the deceased before his next of kin are informed.

However, this publication has established that the deceased was a regular member of the Methodist Church here.

Mbereki said, “the deceased was hit by a Honda sedan near the weighbridge in Bluetown location but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital on Monday. We questioned a 45-year-old man who was driving a Honda sedan in relation to the matter but at this stage we cannot reveal charges that may be preferred against him”.

The place where the deceased was hit by the car is near the spot where three men who were driving a Toyota Fortuner recently died after their car collided with a truck.

In other news, the station commander of Kutlwano police superintendent Neo Serumola has vehemently denied that his station recently detained a prosecutor from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who is based in Gaborone.

The prosecutor was allegedly kept in the police cells because she was found in possession of a gun that was allegedly used to commit a spate of robberies.

Impeccable sources told this publication that the prosecutor allegedly bought the gun from an alleged robbery mastermind sometime back adding that it was not the first time that DPP prosecutor was taken by the police for questioning in relation to the gun.

“We have never detained anybody in our cells in relation to the matter that you are talking about. That is news to me,” added Serumola.
