This comes after a female nurse was raped whilst on duty at the clinic early Sunday morning. In a press release from the ministry today, the permanent secretary Ruth Maphorisa stated that services at the clinic were temporarily suspended until further notice. She however urged the members of the public who normally use that clinic to use nearby government health facilities such as Bontleng, Phase 2, Gaborone West, Lesirane and Nkoyaphiri clinics.

When commenting about the incident on Monday, the Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Alfred Madigele said the incident happened when the nurse was on a health break at 4am that fateful morning. He explained that doctors saw her the same morning in the clinic and that the incident was reported to the police who responded promptly to the crime scene.

“The ministry leadership met with staff and also visited the victim’s family to offer emotional support. Counseling services have also been sought for the entire staff of the health facility and investigations are ongoing. MoH&W condemns this inhuman and unfortunate incident,” he stated.

The ministry appealed to the public and stakeholders, including the community to work together in ensuring that public places such as health facilities remain safe and trusted by users. Following the Sunday attack, the ministry immediately reduced operation hours to 1930hours on Monday.
