Kurly Roots is a public communication campaign aiming to endorse better treatment of natural hair and to purposely serve as a platform that advocates for the better treatment and full embrace of natural hair.

Kemo Segotso who is the campaign manager told Arts & Culture that after conducting a bit of research and interpreting it, there was discovery that not everyone understands their scientific hair patterns and texture. “It is even worse when one get to salons that don’t offer professional natural hair services and having to pay extra money to get hair treatments and styles because management claims your hair is ‘difficult’,” she said.  She added that they want to encourage hair salons to cater more to the various hair spectrums out there within the services they provide, especially natural hair.

Following the campaign, they want to achieve a trustworthy network and the education of natural hair care in salons and a good relationship between clients and hair professionals because all hair textures are equally significant and thus should be treated as such. They also want to dismantle negative vibes associated with the natural hair lifestyle. Segotso highlighted that it is important as a client, walking into a salon that accepts your hair and has fully skilled hair stylists that will handle natural hair as best as they can and to achieve client’s satisfaction.

She also mentioned that they are working with a local brand being Nubian Seed who have put together a hamper to be won during a giveaway competition on online platforms. “We are still looking into getting more sponsors, we are still hopeful to get more brands to support us,” she said. She added that so far they have strategic arrangements of having three events at the University of Botswana that will mainly inform people about the campaign.

Segotso said there would be a panel discussion that will feature a diverse group of people from beauty enthusiasts and hair enthusiasts and lifestyle bloggers.  “We will have hairdressers coming in to style our lovely models. So it is a show you wouldn’t want to miss,” she said.
