Modubule and Mangole were the focus of factional rage on Tuesday

The incident, following the latest public outbursts amid simmering divisions within the BMD, is said to have occurred after a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting of the party. The NWC had met in order to take a resolution regarding the youth congress, which has been postponed.

The NWC had just finished its meeting, and as the two leaders were heading to their vehicles, they were allegedly manhandled by former Serowe South candidate, Iphemele Kgokgothwane and other activists.

In the scuffle, Mangole allegedly suffered injuries to the hand. Kgokgothwane and his crew accused us of trying to destroy their party,” Modubule alleged to Mmegi yesterday.

“It happened very fast because we did not know that they would try that.

“They grabbed us when we were trying to go to our vehicles, when trying the leave party office. Kgokgothwane and his crew are not members of the NWC and we found them by the gate when we were going out.

“He (Kgokgothwane) normally escorts the party president.”

Modubule said they were rescued by Gaolathe after he pleaded with the team of assailants. Superintendent Vincent Pitsietsile confirmed that Mangole and Modubule had opened an assault common case against Kgokgothwane and others.

“We have not arrested anyone, but we are still investigating the matter to find out what might have led to this fight,” Pitsietsile said.

BMD Youth League spokesperson, Kagelelo Kentse described the incident as “unfortunate”.

“The Youth League regrets a very unfortunate incident where presidential bodyguards harassed and manhandled the party secretary general and chairman after the NWC meeting. They have since opened a police case at Central Police Station and the law will take its course,” he said.

Efforts to reach Kgokgothwane and Gaolathe were fruitless yesterday.
