The Simon Moabi-led NYEC has not seen peace since members from different lobby lists were elected mid-February. However a meeting, in Moabi’s absence, was subsequently called where the youths announced they had resolved their differences in the interests of the BDP.

Information reaching Mmegi indicates fresh scuffles have erupted. NYEC treasurer, Bruce Nkgakile has written a letter of demand to NYEC additional member, Collen Mochotlhi demanding P250,000 for alleged defamation.

“Our client informs and advises that on April 24, you made a statement in an electronic social platform being Whatsapp group by the name of ‘BDP NYEC 2017’, to the effect that our aforementioned client was a thief in that he stole monies belonging to the Council and used it for his own personal gain without due and lawful authority.

Our client advises that you went further to threaten to assault him,” Nkgakile’s attorney, Tumelo Tshweneetsile wrote.

The attorney further stated that the message was “wrongful and defamatory” to Nkgakile. He stated that it was made with an “intention to defame Nkgakile and injure his unblemished reputation”.

“Your statement was understood by members of the said group to mean that our client is corrupt, he is a thief and he cannot be trusted with the safe keep of the monies,” Tshweneetsile stated.

The attorney further said as a result of the defamation, Nkgakile’s reputation has been greatly damaged and as such has suffered damages in the sum of P250,000.

“We have accordingly been instructed to demand, as we hereby do, payment of the aforesaid amount of P250,000, legal costs to date in the sum of P2,500 and an apology from yourself tendered in the same electronic social platform you used in defaming our client.”

Tshweneetsile further stated that if the money was not paid in 10 days of the date of the letter (April 24), they would institute legal proceedings against Mochotlhi for the recovery of same without further ado.

Reached for comment, Mochotlhi declined to respond to Mmegi enquiries saying the matter was personal.
