On Saturday, the BMD youth league NEC met and resolved to postpone the congress which was to be held in Ramotswa next Saturday.

The decision was met with resistance and the debate on social media especially, saw party activists divided. Amongst those who opposed the postponement, despite his signature appended to the press release to the effect, was the youth league president, Phenyo Segokgo, who wrote on his Facebook page that he would ensure that the congress went ahead as planned.

Amongst the reasons advanced by the youth NEC for the postponement was shortage of money and inability to reach threshold that is a quorum required by congress.

The statement from the committee also said the secretariat of the BMDYL NEC has not received minutes and delegation list from branches, a situation that can make it impossible to reach the 29 constituencies threshold necessary for the congress to form quorum.

But the matter was by yesterday still not closed, as the BMD secretary general, Gilbert Mangole told Mmegi that the planned evening meeting was called for the youth committee to give the national leadership proper briefing.

“Our meeting with the youth league and reasons that they would advance are the ones that would help us decide whether the congress should be held or not.

The motherbody will find a way to assist so that the congress may be held.

If indeed the minutes and names of people from different constituencies have not reached the secretariat, then it will be unfortunate. Congress cannot be held without delegates and constituencies have to meet the required threshold,” Mangole said.

He said what is important at the congresses is meeting the requirements stated by the constitution.

However, the youth national executive committee claims that it is inundated with complaints of flawed branch congresses that will see most branches bringing parallel delegations to the congress.

On the other hand, team #Itlhabanele insists that the planned congress would go on.
