Police IX are once again winners of the women's softball league

After losing the championship to Wells International last season, the BDF men bounced back this season and proved their dominance in the local softball by snatching the BoFiNet league title under the noses of Police IX.

The army men had previously lost 3-2 to Police, but recovered with a 5-2 win against Wells in the semi finals to book a final against Police.

BDF hammered Police 9-2 to clinch the title.

BDF IX manager, Motlhatlosi Maino said the club is happy to retain their status as the best softball side in the country. He said they remain the only powerhouse in the country.

“We lost the league to Wells last season because of a lapse and similarly the quarter final to Police,” he said.

“We left nothing to chance in the final and we came on them offensively; on that mode we are unstoppable. We wanted to prove to the rest that we are the best team in the country and we plan to remain untouchable in the future.”

Police IX men walked away with silver while former champions, Wells settled for bronze. In the women’s section, Police IX retained the title for the second year running.

Similarly like BDF men, Police’s road to the final was not smooth. After disposing off Wells 9-6 in the Top 8, they lost 4-1 to Vikings in the quarterfinals.

The defending champions recovered in the semifinal and beat Panthers to proceed to the final.

They wiped Vikings 9-2, a similar margin as the men’s final, to retain their trophy. Vikings finished second and Panthers won bronze.

Police IX assistant manager, John Nkwane said the BDF men were intimidating with a fast pitch game but they will go back to the drawing board ahead of the Selebi-Phikwe Extravaganza.

He said they were happy to retain the women championship.

“Vikings were not going to beat us twice. We were just too strong for them.

The loss in the quarter-final was a wake up call. It helped us prepare extra harder and focus, and we conquered.

We will go back and polish for the men, otherwise the eyes switch to the Extravaganza where we will mount a retaliation.”

Botswana Softball Association’s competitions coordinator, Remy Molete said statistics for individual awards will be verified next week.

He said the winners will be awarded their accolades at an award ceremony on May 12 at a venue yet to be announced.
