Health Ministry Warns Against Xango Juice

In a press release issued on Thursday, the director of health services, Khumo Seipone said the public is notified that there is a product called Xango (Mangosteen) juice, which is said to have medical properties and is promoted to treat many medical conditions.

It further reads: “The public should be aware that the product is just fruit juice blend and does not have proven medicinal properties and therefore cannot be marketed and sold as such”.

Seipone advised members of the public to kindly alert the local authorities, Ministry of Health and Wellness through the Drugs Regulatory Unit, Food Control Unit and the police if one is found selling the product with such claims.

From a simple search online Xango product description reads as a pure toxin free supplements and health product that provide superior nutrition and anti-aging benefits along with the protection of powerful anti-oxidants to help fight cell breakdown and free radicals that can cause disease.

It states that Xango Mangosteen Juice made from the whole Mangosteen fruit (Rind and All), Xango Juice is filled with biologically active compounds and phytonutrients-including xanthones, catechins, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins-to support respiratory health, immune health, intestinal health and joint health, with no artificial flavours or colours, no added sweeteners.

Xango appears to be a scam sold to Batswana under false promises that it will cure diseases like cancer, HIV/AIDS and other chronic illness.

Someone who preferred anonymity and have used Xango juice for sometime told The Monitor in an interview that Xango is a juice made of an Asian fruit and imported here as a juice and not as a medicine.

The source said she found her friend drinking it and that’s when she fell in love with it.

“Xango is a sweet, delicious juice like any other juices the difference is that unlike other juices you cannot find it in local shops. It is imported and sold in Botswana by traders and individuals can buy and resell them,” said the source.

She however said Xango juice can help to relieve pains in one’s body but it is not a medicine.

There are reports that some people have been selling the juice with claims that it has medical properties and is promoted to treat many medical conditions.

It is reported that a bottle of 750ml Xango is sold at P350 and a case of four bottles costs P950.
