Police Nab Duo In Finance Ministry Break-In

Central Police identified the duo as suspects after they seized three of the cheque leaves from them. However the police investigations are ongoing to locate the remaining 40 cheques leaves. In an interview with The Monitor, Central police station commander, Mothusi Phadi stated that the case of office breaking and theft was reported on April 23, 2018 and on Thursday the police made a breakthrough after a tip-off and arrested the two suspects.

“The woman is an employee of Payless Supermarket in the Main Mall and they are currently in police custody helping the police with investigations. The duo are suspected to have broken into the office and stole the cheque leaves,” Phadi said.

The police boss said the duo would soon appear before court after completion of their investigations some time this week. He said the investigation into the theft began last month after the theft report and after two weeks the police managed to make a breakthrough and arrested the suspects.

Police suspect the cheque leaves might be used to swindle innocent people their valuable goods or as exchange of goods. He pleaded with members of the community to refrain from accepting any cheque from the Finance Ministry without confirming its authenticity.

Phadi pleaded with members of the public to be on the look-out for the said cheque, and not to be victims.

The police pleaded with the public to contact them on any suspicions of a cheque, especially if they can receive it hand written. Meanwhile, Phadi said they also made a breakthrough in arresting two Batswana men, who are residents of Bontleng location in Gaborone, for a case of breaking into a motor vehicle and theft. He said the duo aged 25 and 30 are suspected to have on April 30 at Extension 12 broken into a car and stolen two guns.

“Luckily, after a tip-off on Thursday we managed to locate and arrest the duo for the offence of breaking into a motor vehicle and theft and investigated for a number of robbery cases that were reported recently in Gaborone and surrounding areas.”

Phadi said they link the duo with recent robbery cases where items like guns were used to threaten the victims, but they are yet to cross check if they have previous convictions, especially for similar offences.

“After arrest, when they were interrogated the police managed to retrieve the said two guns from the suspects. They are also in police custody helping the police with investigations of recent robbery cases,” Phadi said.
