Teen defilement suspect hangs inside a police cell

The young girl was a Standard Three pupil at Khwee Primary School. The suspect purportedly took the girl with him to a certain farm near Khwee where he was employed as a farm hand and sexually abused her.

The suspect brought the girl back to the village after three days at the farm. When the young girl arrived at her parents’ homestead at dusk and after learning of the details of her disappearance, the parents reported the matter to the police.

The suspect was arrested the next day around 9 am. He was held in the police cell while the police went to fetch his victim to take both for medical examinations at Letlhakane Primary Hospital.

But three hours later, upon opening the cell to take the suspect to the hospital, the police officers found him hanging from a cell window burglar bars.

He had allegedly stripped off the bound edge of the cell blanket and used it to hang himself on the burglar bars.

Letlhakane police station commander superintendent Michael Maphephu confirmed the incident. He said the deceased body was taken to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital for postmortem. Following the postmortem he said they don’t suspect any foul play.

“It is unusual and it is a shocking matter for the police and equally it has left the villagers of Khwee shocked,” he said.

“The deceased was certified dead upon arrival at Letlhakane Primary Hospital. His body was immediately sent to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital for postmortem and the postmortem was completed. We have no further suspicions other than that the deceased took his life,” he said.

Maphephu said the corpse of the deceased is currently kept at Letlhakane Primary Hospital morgue awaiting burial in Khwee this weekend.
