New challenger emerges in BTTA race

However, after months of waiting, the executive committee has finally set the date for the association’s watershed elections.

“We have submitted the draft of the new constitution to the Registrar of Societies.

But there were a lot of things to be fixed before it could be approved. Since we are running out of time, we have decided to go on with the elections and they would be held on May 8,” BTTA public relations officer, Tswelelo Kololo told Mmegi Sport yesterday.

With the date set aspiring candidates are already preparing for the D-day.  BTTA president, Lesego Maifala has already expressed his interest in retaining his position. Maifala who was voted into office in 2014 told Mmegi Sport last year that the two-year term was too short and his committee could not achieve some of the set objectives.

“I think I will (run for the second term), given that I want to push our current agenda for the next two years so that we achieve our plans and objectives. I don’t think it would be wise to run for one term because we are not going to achieve exactly what we intended to in two years, we need at least four years,”

Maifala told Mmegi Sport last year after the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). Maifala will face stiff competition from former BTTA president, Thebe Selema.

Selema served as president until 2014 when he decided against seeking re-election.  The former Smash Maniacs player is said to be pushed by the club to oust Maifala.

“There is a rumour that former president Selema is coming back. The guys from Smash Maniacs are said to be in talks with to take over. Looking at the reputation of the club he likely to give Maifala a run for his money,” said a source close to the developments.

Efforts to get a comment from Selema were futile at press time.

The elections could be the defining moment for the growth of the sport in the country, as the new president would be given a four-year tenure, rather than two years, as per the new constitution.
